Encontros da Imagem

Having been born in 1987, the Festival Encontros da Imagem  celebrates thirty years of its founding. The 2017 edition will take place between 15th of September and 29th of October, and this will be a celebratory edition. ENCONTROS DA IMAGEM – 30 years

Thirty years ago, the national and international photographic panorama was very restricted, with a low number of authors, especially nationals. Even though having a low number of exhibitions, the Festival’s aim was to present some classical authors, essential to the knowledge and understanding of the history of photography, and simultaneously, give acquaintance on the essential names of contemporaneity.

The Festival Encontros da Imagem gradually redefined itself in order to adapt to the aesthetic and formal developments of creative photography , which is the main focus of the event.

After twenty-six editions and 30 years, the Festival Encontros da Imagem became nowadays an almost unique reference of the photographic culture in Portugal, and has reached a prominent position in the international panorama, being currently one of the oldest and renowned photography festivals in Europe.

At a time when the image acquires an unexpected strength, which is demonstrated by its power to captivate and even to deceive, the territories of photography have increasingly gained importance and vivacity.

The Festival Encontros da Imagem has been building collaborative relationships with other festivals and institutions in order to promote, preserve and enhance the photographic culture. This is an essential task that not only works as a pedagogical attitude, but also in conquering new audiences and giving them awareness on this matter. It is also worth mentioning that the Festival has established partnerships with various public and private institutions, in particular with local governmental and educational institutions. These relationships allow the most diverse communities to raise interest for photography, particularly in schools, which represents a greater gain of audiences.

In this edition, the absence of a specific theme is intentional. This will be a celebratory edition. However, the festival will continue to develop an eclectic programme, intending to confront and reflect around the current thematic proposals of photography. The works of numerous artists, nationals and internationals, can be seen. They will be spread over several public and private spaces (historic buildings, museums, galleries and others).

Reestablishing an old practice, of decentralisation, the Festival Encontros da Imagem aims to contribute to a regionalisation through the culture, therefore this year’s edition will be expanded to the neighbouring cities of the urban quadrilateral (Barcelos, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão), and also

Porto.

By occupying historical and monumental buildings in Braga and in other cities, the photo exhibitions also contribute to the promotion of monuments and archaeological sites, thereby reinforcing the interaction between these monuments and visitors, and stimulating awareness and education for the knowledge and protection of historical and cultural heritage of these cities.

In this edition, there will be a wider participation of national artists. The programme, will include a wide range of activities in the areas of production, creation and dissemination, promoting new artists and building interaction with schools and universities.

Over these 30 years, the Festival Encontros da Imagem has developed a very important artistic and cultural activity in the city of Braga, with  international distinction, in the field of creation, production and dissemination of photography.

Exhibitions

2017, July 13

In this edition of the Festival Encontros da Imagem – 30 years, a year of celebration, there will be no specific theme. The works of several artists, national and international, can be seen, as they will be spread over several public and private spaces (historic buildings, museums, galleries and others).

Reestablishing an old practice, of decentralisation, the Festival Encontros da Imagem aims to contribute to a regionalisation through the culture, therefore this year it will be expanded to the neighbouring cities of the urban quadrilateral (Barcelos, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão) and also Porto.

The programme is expected to include 34 exhibitions, being 24 of them in the city of Braga and other 10 allocated in the other four cities.

In Braga, the exhibitions will occupy 10 different spaces (Tibães Monastery, Monastery of St. Francis of Real, Museum of the Image, Regional Archaeological Museum D. Diogo de Sousa, Nogueira da Silva Museum, Medieval Hall of the University of Minho’s Rectorate, Residence of the Crivos, Casa Esperança, Train Station Gallery and B-Lounge of the Main Library of University of Minho.

The remaining exhibitions, which constitute a significant extension of the Festival to other cities, will occupy 8 different spaces:  Barcelos (Gil Vicente Theatre and Municipal Tourism Gallery), Guimarães (Alberto Sampaio Museum and B-Lounge of the Main Library of the University of Minho) and Vila Nova de Famalicão (Soledade Malvar House), with 2 exhibitions in each of these cities. In the city of Porto, there will be 4 exhibitions, 2 in the Palace Viscounts of Balsemão, 1 in Mira Forum Gallery and the other at the Gallery of the IPCI-Institute for Cultural Production and Image.

In this year’s programme, there was an innovative invitation directed to artists in order to create works in many different media formats, establishing a dialogue with the photographic works from the Festival’s collection.

The Festival will still focus on the Portuguese photography, with a large participation of national artists, not only in individual exhibitions but also in collectives. This will be an opportunity for the launching of emerging authors, especially Europeans, through the selected exhibitions from the Open Call. The Festival will also exhibit works from its collection, belonging to some classic authors, creating contrast with  contemporary authors.

ENCONTROS DA IMAGEM

EVENTS

2017, July 13

The programme for the commemorative edition of The Festival Encontros da Imagem will include a diverse set of activities, always with focus on the areas of creation, production and dissemination of national and international photography. There will be activities to specific audiences with particular focus on photography, as well as to the general public. It will be given great importance to young people, in particular with the creation of specific activities and educational service.

In this way, the activities shall consist of 7 areas that complement each other:

Exhibitions – a set of thirty-four (34) exhibitions, and 24 of them in the city of Braga, occupying 10 different spaces.

The other 10 exhibitions, will be a significant extension of the Festival to other four cities: Barcelos, Guimarães, Vila Nova de Famalicão and Oporto, occupying eight different spaces.

In this year’s programme, there was an innovative invitation directed to artists in order to create works in many different media formats, establishing a dialogue with the photographic works from the Festival’s collection.

The Festival will still focus on the Portuguese photography, with a large participation of national artists, not only in individual shows but also in collective exhibitions. This will be an opportunity for the launching of emerging authors, especially Europeans, through the exhibitions, which derived from the Open Call. The Festival will also exhibit works from its collection, belonging to some classic authors, creating contrast with contemporary authors.

Open Call – reaffirming the will to continue to launch emerging authors, the festival will promote a public call to national and international artists, who would like their works to be selected – this will have the participation of an international jury composed by three elements – this results in works from 16 to 20 authors, which will be included in one or more exhibitions of this year’s edition. With this action, the festival becomes closer to communities and values the importance of the image in the construction of a collective memory.

Artistic residencies – the invitation directed to two artists-one national and another international, will provide during a week in Braga to creat works that will be object of two exhibitions taking place at the Monastery of St. Francis of Real;

Projections – photographic and video projections dedicated not only to emerging authors, including those that may result from this edition’s Open Call, but also for authors from the Festival collection, will be promoted in public spaces, in Largo do Paço and Rossio da Sé;

Cinema sessions – in video projections, there will be a selection dedicated to the subject of photography and authors’ biographies, which will happen as long as the Festival is held;

Conferences – workshops and educational services – regarding the educational service we will dedicate special attention to school groups  through guided tours to the exhibitions.

For an audience more directly connected to Visual Arts, there will be workshops and conferences.

Instameet – the programme offers an activity directed to the general public – especially the youngest, by performing a PhotoWalk for Instagramers. Thus, with the use of new technologies and social networks we also intend to stimulate and democratise the image. During the Instameet, all participants will share their experience through standard hashtags.
