"Resort 1"

Resort 1

Resort 1 is a series of highly saturated colour photographs representing my vision of the contemporary face of Butlin’s, a very typically English holiday camp in Bognor Regis. Observing and recording the most contemporary developments inside the camp, this work considers the new ways in which the Butlin’s resort is providing a leisure environment for public consumption. Ex- circus man Billy Butlin opened the first Butlin’s holiday camp in the mid 1930s. The camp was designed to provide affordable and fun holidays for ordinary British families. The brand was incredibly popular and expanded to nine further sites in Britain by the mid 1960s. Later in the 1970s and 80s when cheap package holidays (to mainland Europe and sometimes further afield) became available the Butlin’s brand went into decline and seven camps closed for good. The three remaining camps at Bognor Regis, Minehead and Skegness are now owned by Bourne Leisure who have reinvented Butlin’s as a new holiday experience offering both family breaks as well as (separate) adult only weekends. The photographs for Resort 1 were all made between 2009 and 2011 and aim to record and comment on the new Butlin’s family experience. During this period working at Butlin’s I developed a completely new approach to my existing practice and worked with a production team of between three and eight people to create a series of large scale images made using a combination of large and medium format cameras with a large bank of added lighting. This new way of working, influenced by the work of the John Hinde studio photographers (making vivid colour postcards in the 19060s and 70s), enabled me to produce large scale highly detailed and vividly coloured prints that explore the incredibly theatrical space of the Butlin’s resort and examine how the holiday makers experience this environment. The key members of the production team working with me on Resort 1 were Vicki Churchill (lighting director) and Andrew Bruce (technical director). Further assistants included Jasper Wyatt, Robin Godden, Dani Evans, Stephen Catten, Tracey McEahran and Jennifer Patterson were also regular assistants working on lighting, model release management and digital capture. Extra assistants (one or two per shoot) included Felix Fox, Helen Goodin, Katie Bedlow, Bim Hjortronsteen, Holly Hang, Clare Long and Sveinung Skaalnes. I am indebted to this team for their brilliant work.
