"Mary's Boy and Flowers in the Yard"

Mary's Boy and Flowers in the Yard

The images are stories (narratives) found in fragments, which do not specify a particular reading order. They begin and end, and develop in an almost reckless manner. Stelios Kallinikou uses photography to keep a sort of personal diary of his surroundings. In an eccentric mix of colour and black and white images, close-ups and broad landscapes, he presents a diverse series that seems to tell a narrative (story). And yet, as soon as the narrative starts to unfold, it falls apart again, redirecting our attention another way entirely — what are the events of Stellios’s diary? From the small connections with human frailty, to the depersonalized lines of human or animal figures, to the magnificence of universal awe, Kallinikou offers us a photographic insight into his personal experience. The show brings together many heterogeneous elements such as animals, sceneries, faces, bodies and statues . For example a hand where the personal landscape of the palm is up in the air, two "conspiratorial" figures of the Statue of Liberty, photographed at night, looking as if they are ready to escape. All images teeter between desire and death, hope and faith; an intense dualistic, interstitial space.
