Discovery Awards Projection
The exhibition "MEMORY LAB OF HAPPINESS" embodies the "discovery authors" projects, obtained from the open call released in the beginning of 2016, in accordance to the challenge of thinking critically the place of "Memory" and "Happiness" nowadays. The Festival reaffirms the will to launch revelation authors through a public call, thereby generating opportunities for exhibition and projection.
In this Edition, the festival is pleased to announce the accomplishing of a partnership with the Portuguese Institute of Youth and Sports, the patron of the Discovery Award that will be assigned to the best Portfolio in Contemporary Photography, and announced during the inaugural session of the Festival Encontros da Imagem 2016 at Tibães Monastery. This award consists of a cash prize, and the artist must be under the age of 30.
Throughout this selection, Photography raises questioning of the utopia of Happiness offered by religions and political projects over the years. The authors here presented reshape their worldview through uncertain, ambiguous and polysemic images, becoming the reflection of the instability and fragility of the contemporary thought. This series of images follow the rhythms of the human belief ensuring a journey through the paths of human frailty.
Strong personal views of confrontation or criticism allow these photos to show us Paradise, but also Hell. Jacques Prévert, French poet and writer, describes Happiness as a sense of memory, of something that has already happened, by "the noise it makes when it leaves." The contemporary illusion seems to be the insatiable and voracious demand for happiness.
Happiness is a concept of huge human complexity, it is embodied by deep psychological changes and involves numerous situations which imply the desire for self-assertion, struggle for power, vanity and freedom. Trough this exhibition, which was elected to occupy Tibães Monastery in Braga, the Festival aims to identify the multiple visions on the way of looking through new and powerful ways, revealing the multiple territories of Happiness. Similar to a laboratory for experimentation, this collective draws attention to subjects that range from the use of files, some of them from the family, going through documentary projects on the new ways of life in the search for happiness, or even through autobiographical projects, all questioning the significance of documentary photography. This exhibition includes authors from Europe and from countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Peru, Syria and Uzbekistan, among others.
Stevie Wonder, the blind musician and composer, lends melody to this edition, spreading a poetic vision about humanity. In that musical metaphor there is a sort of rhythm, which sets the tone to the multiple visions of this exhibition and reveals a disturbing portrait of an emergent tenderness, sympathy and disquietness. Happiness is an infinite emotion and we could talk about it relentlessly, but the best description begins in silence, mediated by the images. According to this, we acknowledge that photography, or the images in general, are still the feeding machine of our perception of things and of the world, both aesthetically and affectively.
