With this new work, I continue the topographic map exploration in 454, bordered to the South by the Serra da Arrábida and Setúbal, to the North by route A2, to East by Palmela and to the West by the residential area of Quinta do Conde. This is the 3rd chapter of this project, which started in 2012 with AUGI # 12, followed by VARZEA in 2013 and, as its title indicates, it is a foray into the territory of the suburban gardens of this area, which are the result of a quite spontaneous activity, something that did not follow any plan from any government agency (unlike some countries of Northern Europe, where the tradition of community gardens have a history in the 19th century and where almost always existed a governmental intervention in the distribution and management of the land).
“Nas Hortas” is a work where I sought to investigate the processes of change and reinvention of space, turned into a place as a consequence of this transformation. By exploring this territory, I’ve been watching the different ways people use to handle their relation with the Earth, in which the first goal is a matter of being “merely practical”, although it opens doors to other possibilities and different readings. It is also a reflection about freedom, in a sense that these mentioned transformative processes enable us to reflect on the role that the creative act, even though sometimes not in a conscious way, can have in today’s society, more and more “normalized” and standardized
