Periphery, Territory and Identities
Throughout almost 30 years, the Festival Encontros da Imagem has contributed to raise awareness for some of the most prestigious authors of photography, both classical and contemporary. The guideline followed by the Festival’s editions intends to privilege the international dimension, boosting the encouragement and interaction among all the involved agents. In this edition, the partnership established with 2 other festivals is highlighted with particular emphasis: OUTONO FOTOGRÁFICO of Ourense, in Galiza, and ENCONTROS DE AGOSTO, in Fortaleza, Brazil, partnership from which the project EXPANDED TERRITORY was raised, with a desire to value territories of Lusophony.
Through this selection, the curators from the partner festivals, Victor Nieves, Patricia Van and Ângela Ferreira, search for a reflection on Lusophony and its territories, based on their own perceptions as individuals from three different nationalities. The project EXPANDED TERRITORY has been exhibited in the city of Coruña, during the first semester of 2016, and it will be now presented for the first time in Portugal, illustrating the existent bonds between Galicia, Portugal and Brazil, through the eyes of 27 artists. It is organised by the Festival Outono Fotográfico’s team, in collaboration with the Portuguese Festival Encontros da Imagem and the Brazilian Encontros de Agosto, and also receives support and promotion from the management board of Coruña.
“The project reunites synergies from the three festivals, two of them already historical, that are linked by documentary photography which is the axis of the exhibition and of its full program.”
Vitor Nieves, Outono Fotográfico in Sermos Galizia
“Expanded Territory is more than just a collective exhibition of contemporary photography performed in the streets or by the sea, it is also the meeting point between three close cultures, siblings, which unfortunately don’t share many communication bridges. For that reason we are pleased to foster this project, which was born from the intertwining of these three festivals, and we are convinced that this initiative will be the trigger to many other vital communication links.”
Goretti Sanmartin, head of the cultural department and Vice-President of Deputación Coruña in Sermos Galizia
“Through this selection, we aim to present the diversity of the creative possibilities in the representation of territories, in its expansion over the diverse identities and peripheries. With Expanded Territory we seek to provoke a disturbing and committed reflection over the territory observation, turning this selection into an inventive register of the so alive and growing Lusophony concept.”
