Act of Guinea’s Deeds, 1979 — Fernando Matos Silva, Portugal (81’)
In this saga, the hegemonic and apologetic discourses on the history of the Portuguese nation are confronted with the images captured of “Portuguese Guinea” between 1969 and 1970. After unveiling various historical events, we are confronted with the brutality of the Portuguese occupation of Africa and the violence of the colonial war. It could be said that this film is the antithesis of the propaganda film Guiné, Berço do Império 1446-1946 (1946), made by António Lopes Ribeiro during the Cinegraphic Mission to the African Colonies, as part of the commemorations of the 5th Centenary of the Discovery of Guinea by the Estado Novo. Acto dos Feitos da Guiné also shows images of metropolitan Lisbon in the period following the 25th of April 1974.
* The screening will be attended by director Fernando Matos Silva.
