Orixe (Origin)
Orixe is the book resulting from the XI edition of the Galician Prize for Contemporary Photography, with a total of 80 pages, presented in a bilingual format in Galician and English.
This work addresses the issue of gender-based violence through an intimate and familial narrative. Glorianna Ximendaz uses photography as a powerful tool to challenge social norms, dismantle oppressive structures, promote healing and empowerment, and celebrate the strength and resilience of women.
Through photographs of her ancestors, from her great-great-grandmother to herself, Orixe explores themes such as patriarchal power, the privileges inherent in normative masculinity and class, the transmission and concealment of violence within family and social structures, the penalties imposed on women who challenge the patriarchal order, the imposition of oppressive beauty standards, obstetric violence, and forced sexuality.
This book is part of the OF collection, dedicated to photography and photobooks, by the publisher Difusora de Letras, Artes e Ideas, based in Ourense (Galiza). As in previous publications, the design and production of this book are clearly at the service of the author’s work, reinforced by texts from Vítor Nieves, Iria Castro Fernández, and Xosé López Campos.
