Kioskzine 11 — “Places of the body” by Lucília Monteiro

Lucília Monteiro is the guest photographer in Kioskzine’s eleventh publication with her work entitled “Places of the body”. This work presents a selection of Lucília Monteiro’s photographs from the José de Sousa Monteiro Archive, which is part of the Madeira Photography Museum – Vicente’s Atelier.

PRESENT BODY

The photographs
prove
that there was
a body
nourished by love
unquestioned
– there were no doubts
in dead times –
there was no leg
that grew
more than an arm
the weight
was proportional
outdoor activities
swings and slides
ensured the measurement
the fall
was free
but assisted
I didn’t know
beyond the rhyme
what I was doing.

Poem “Corpo Presente” by Joana de Bastos Rodrigues, from the book “Dos Nomes, As Outras Palavras”, Coleção Novíssima Editora Exclamação, 2020.

Kioskzine

The Kioskzine project was founded in Porto in February 2020 by José Farinha, Paulo Pimenta and Daniel Rodrigues (however, for professional reasons, he has no longer been part of the project since the end of 2023).

The aim of these photographers was to create a fanzine, a visual document, on A5 format paper, with quarterly publication and a limited print run that, in addition to promoting photography, also functions as a photographic documentary archive in which the desire to document, publicise, question and provoke discussion through photography will always be present. Kioskzine aims to be accessible, direct and comprehensive. It’s a publication that doesn’t want to be confined to a universe inhabited only by photographers and image lovers, but rather to reach out to everyone who, even if they aren’t familiar with the work of some photographers, might be interested in the stories told through our pages. Kioskzine aims to tread a path outside the norm and conformity.

As an editorial project, Kioskzine began by publishing issue zero through the collective lens of its founders in October 2020. After printing this first version of the magazine in printed format, Pauliana Valente Pimentel, Manuel Roberto, João Pina, Rita Carmo, Ana Brígida, Augusto Brázio, Luísa Ferreira, José Bacelar, Valter Vinagre and Inês d’Orey were invited to take part, telling their stories in the following ten editions. One photographer for each edition, but also a promotional film with each photographer. To date, the Kioskzine project has also held five photographic exhibitions, at the Fórum da Maia, at the Instituto de Produção Cultural & Imagem and at the Mostra de Fotografia de Autores in Lisbon, Faro and Porto, the result of a selection of the photographs that have been published.
