Césaire, un homme une terre, 1976 — Sarah Maldoror, França (57’)
In this film, Césaire, poet of Negritude, reflects on colonialism and its consequences, talks about literature, poetry and surrealism, looking for bridges between African and European culture, whose irreconcilability persists as long as the domination of one over the other persists. He addresses the neocolonial status of the French islands, considered Départements du Outre-mer (overseas departments), a status they still maintain today and against which voices are tirelessly raised, as recently happened in French New Caledonia, an island in the Pacific, where the Kanak people continue to claim their independence. Césaire, un homme une terre is an opportunity to reflect on the different types of colonialism in contemporary times.
Regards de mémoire, 2003 — Sarah Maldoror, France, Martinique, Haiti (24’)
In this film, Sarah Maldoror talks to various writers and thinkers, including Aimé Césaire in front of the statues of the Cap 110 Mémoire et Fraternité de Laurent Valère memorial in Martinique, and to Édouard Glissant in Fort de Joux (in the Jura, France, near the Swiss border), in the cell where Haitian general Toussaint Louverture, leader of the Haitian Revolution, was held prisoner until his death in 1803. Toussaint Louverture fought against slavery and for Haitian independence at the same time as the French Revolution.
