Mandabi, 1968 — Ousmane Sembène, Senegal/France (92′)
In Mandabi, Ousmane Sembène exposes modern life in Senegal, tackling themes such as neocolonialism and capitalism, religion, social inequalities and corruption. Ibrahima Dieng lives in Dakar with his two wives and seven children. Unemployed and in debt, he receives a money order from his emigrant nephew, whose money he collected cleaning the streets of Paris. However, due to the bureaucratic system, Ibrahima has to produce documents to prove his identity and be able to withdraw the money, forcing him into a series of absurd endeavours, whose mission is further hampered by the corruption that exists in the services.
