Miguel Rio Branco: Self portrait of Nowhere

Miguel Rio Branco (BR, 1946) is one of the most important names in the visual arts in Brazil, and his work is recognised globally. His productions draw on the possibilities of photography and, throughout his career, his work seeks to deconstruct what is a more conventional view of the image into a fleeting record with a tense form and an autobiographical dimension. In what will be one of the largest exhibitions ever held in Portugal, the artist is presenting works from three series: ‘Maciel’, produced in 1979 in a prostitution area of the same name in Pelourinho, Salvador da Bahia; “Academia de Boxe Santa Rosa”, from 1993, made in a boxing gym in Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro, close to where the artist lived at the time; and “Out of Nowhere”, which is an installation of a more biographical nature, created for the 5th Bienal de La Habana (1994), and which has travelled the world. The curatorial approach will endeavour to highlight the evolution of the artist’s language, adopting a perspective of intimacy and confrontation with the viewer’s comfort.
