Sambizanga (1973)

Sambizanga, 1973 — Sarah Maldoror, Angola/France (102’)

Sambizanga is Sarah Maldoror’s first fiction film, inspired by the literary work The True Life of Domingos Xavier (1961) by José Luandino Vieira.

As we accompany a woman, with her baby on her back, on her long walk from the musseques to the outskirts of Luanda, we discover the whereabouts of her missing husband. The typically African landscapes, full of colour and bright sounds, that Maria crosses are contrasted with the violence inflicted by the PIDE on those fighting for freedom.
