Colonial Ghosts: image, archive and memory

As part of the 34th edition of the Encontros da Imagem Festival, themed “Legacies of Colonialism,” the EI TALKS focuses on the memory of Portugal’s colonial past. Beyond revisiting events from this historical period and the subsequent ghosts that emerge in the present, this program aims to create a space for dialogue on the impact of colonialism today, exploring the national historical context that frames this festival.

EI TALKS will thus provide a platform for a series of discussions about Portugal’s colonial past, through the creation, appropriation, and resignification of images that foster new interpretations and imaginaries, challenging the oppressive narratives of a not-so-distant past. Within this framework, various perspectives will be explored by the invited speakers of this edition, ranging from personal memories, intergenerational post-memories, performative and autobiographical expressions, as well as investigative and documentary practices.
