Photobook Award 2024
The Photobook Awards are part of the 34th Encontros da Imagem Festival and give artists, amateurs and professionals, both national and international, the chance to exhibit their photobooks. With a diverse jury made up of recognised publishers, the Open Call aims to highlight and reward the best photobooks of the year.
In the 34th edition of the festival, we received more than 200 applications from artists all over the world.

Jens Friis
Independent Curator and Publisher of KATALOG — Journal of Photography & Video
Jens Friis (MA, History of Photographic Art) was curator in charge of the photographic collection of Museet for Fotokunst, Odense (Denmark) as well as the artistic co-director of the photo festival FotoTriennale.dk initiated by same museum from 2003-2016. During this period he was also the editor of the bilingual and internationally recognized journal KATALOG, which he has continued personally since 2015. Now in its 34th year with an editorial “flexi-board”, contributors and subscribers from all over the world, KATALOG is also an international platform for projects such as Nordic Photo Festival Network, the Creative Europe partnership Parallel and most recently the international Fast Forward – Women in Photography launched at Paris Photo and Tate Modern in 2019. KATALOG has cooperated with the festivals in Cardiff, Glasgow, Houston, Landskrona, Lisbon, e.a. As an author, he has written numerous articles for KATALOG, other journals and several introductions. He has contributed to anthologies i.e. Danish Photographic History (2004) and The History of European Photography 1970-2000 (2016). Aiding the advancement of new talents, he has served on international nominating committees for awards such as Photo Lucida (Seattle), Voies Off (Arles), Kolga Tbilisi (Georgia) as well as on the advisory committee of the Spanish magazine EXIT. Since his debut as a portfolio reviewer at FotoFest in 2004, he has participated in more than 70 festivals and seminars sharing his knowledge, advice and connections, but also gathering valuable material for exhibitions and future issues of the journal.

Lives and works in Lisbon. Creator, performer, educator, editor and producer of projects and events in the field of Visual Arts. Artistic residencies at the “Rencontres de la Jeune Photographie Internationale” [Niort] at Ferme d’en Haut [Lille] , at “Cité U” [Paris], in France, at “Pedra Sina Residence” [Funchal], at Córtex Frontal [Arraiolos], at CELEUMA and at RAMA [ Maceira ] in Portugal. Solo exhibition “Corpo Volátil” at the Centro Cutural de Belém, in Lisbon, “What remains – a invenção da memória” at Barreiro’s Month of Photography, Augusto Cabrita Municipal Auditorium, Portugal, and at the “6ème Rencontre Internationale de la Photographie, in Ghar El Melh”, Tunisia. Group exhibition “Para lá da estrada preta”, at CECAL – Centro de Experimentação e Criação Artística, in Loulé, Portugal. Coordination and Co-Curatorship of the Visual Arts Exhibition “Aproximar-nos do Caos [com umas lentes que permitam ver melhor o que isso é] at Galeria ACERT, in Tondela, Portugal. Presentation of the performance project “Anatomia de uma imagem [uma instalação habitada]” as part of CITEMOR’s Festival 2019, Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal. Since 2012, she has been the coordinator of the Escola Informal de Fotografia project, a long-term educational project for creators in the field of photography. In 2021, she was part of the Portfolio Review team at the Circulation(s) Festival – Festival de la jeune photographie européenne. In 2022 she was a project assistant at the international association “FotoEvidence”. Since 2022, he has been a member of the jury for the editorial Star Photobook Dummy Award.

Susana Lourenço Marques
Teacher, Curator and Independent Editor
She is a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. She holds a PhD in Communication and Art from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon. She is the author of the books Ether/ a photography and history laboratory (Dafne, 2018) and Pó, Cinza e Nevoeiro, an essay on absence (Prisma, 2018) and co-edited Lágrimas de Crocodilo (2022) and Pedagogy of the streets, Porto 1977 (2018). From her activity as a curator, the following exhibitions stand out: Quem te ensinou? Ninguém, de Elvira Leite (Porto, 2016), Galeria Portátil PLF, (Porto, 2018), Pedagogy of the streets, Porto 1977 (Nova Iorque, 2019), Imagem/Técnica, os inventários de Emilio Biel (Porto, 2020), Opacity of Water (Porto, 2021) e Eternal Youth (Porto, 2023). In 2014, Susana co-founded the publishing house (www.pierrotlefou.pt).
