  The Open Call for the Discovery Awards 2024 is open to all artists, professional or amateur, national or international, over 18 years old. Artists may participate on an individual basis or as a collective;

  The jury will select the top 5 projects that will be invited to exhibit their work in the 34rd edition of the festival from the 20th of September to the 3rd November 2024 in Braga, Portugal.

  In addition to the 5 projects selected for exhibition, there will also be 15 selected to be part of a video projection that will be part of this edition of the festival.

  About

  For the 34th edition of the photo festival Encontros da Imagem, we would like to present different trends in contemporary photography. Highlight its democracy and richness in its different approaches. Therefore, all projects are welcome: from documentary typology works to others that explore the limits of photographic construction.

  Encontros da Imagem returns to Braga this year between September 20th and November 3rd, with a new concept and an approach that looks forward while using the past as guidance. With exhibitions also in the cities of Porto, Guimarães, and Barcelos, we hope to democratize photography for its fruition and creation – and to hear both the individual and collective experience.

  Our first open call of the year is open for submissions between February 15th and April 28th.

  What winners receive

  • The finalists will have their work produced and exhibited at the 2024 edition of the festival;
  • The finalists will have their work published in the catalog of the 2024 edition;
  • From the top 5 the jury will choose a winner who will receive a prize of 1.000€ (one thousand euros)

• Emergentes Portfolio Reviews

  Encontros da Imagem is excited to announce that our annual portfolio reviews — with a jury of internationally and nationally acclaimed professionals in the photography field — are returning to the historic city of Braga in September 2024. This Award offers a chance to meet with recognized commissioners, gallerists, curators and publishers, to present your portfolio, promote your work and receive valuable feedback and advice.

  The 32 selected photographers receive 8 individual review appointments, lasting 20 minutes each (10+10 minutes), and have the opportunity to influence who they meet with ahead of the reviews.

  The jury will be looking for the best contemporary photographic works, and will award the 1st place winner a prize of 3000€ and 2 Honorable mentions with 1.000€ each. The winner will have a solo exhibition on the edition of 2025, as well.

  Please notice the Portfolio review will be presential, in Braga, Portugal.

  What winners receive

  The EMERGENTES 2024 – International Photography Award Encontros da Imagem, consists of 3.000€ monetary award and a solo exhibition in the next edition of the festival in 2025; plus, two Honorable Mentions of 1.000€ each and a projection of the total series. The winner will have their project published on KATALOG magazine.

• Photobook Award

  As part of its 34th edition, Encontros da Imagem – International Photography and Visual Arts Festival, is promoting the Open Call – Photobook Award EI2024.

  Aware of the fundamental role the photobook has played in recent years in the presentation of photographic narratives, the development of creative processes, construction and experimentation with materials and techniques, Encontros da Imagem has sought to promote, since 2014, independent authors and projects through a competition aimed at highlighting and rewarding the best photobooks of the year, with a diverse jury with in-depth knowledge of photography and the publishing sector, which will result in a collective exhibition to be presented at the festival alongside the rest of its programme, as well as a cash prize.

  What winners receive

  All the books sent and submitted will be presented at a collective exhibition, which will take place between 20 September and 3 November 2024 in Braga, Portugal, as part of the 34th edition of the festival, as well as being presented and announced on the festival’s website and its various communication channels.

  The jury will evaluate all the books and select a winning project which will be awarded with a cash prize of €1,000.00, and if it deems it appropriate, honorable mentions.

  How to enter

  For the application to be considered, there must be a registration and submission of the project through Picter’s platform, subject to the following conditions:

  • Each application costs 20,00€;
  • Each project submitted will be considered a single application;
  • Each candidate can submit a maximum of 3 photobooks, that will be considered as 3 separate applications;
  • The deadline for the open call is 30 June 2024;
  • The books submitted in the application must be sent by 30 July 2024.

  Authors must send their candidate book by 30 July 2024 in order to be considered for the prize. If the book arrives after this date, the packaging must bear the postmark or stamp from before this date. The package should be sent to the following address:
