The 29th edition of Encontros da Imagem - International Photography and Visual Arts Festival will take place from the 13th of September to the 27th of October in Braga, with parallel exhibitions happening in the cities of Guimarães, Barcelos and Porto.
This year's theme What Now? wants to bring together different ideas and ways of seeing our present world in an effort to incentive-discussion around urgent subjects such as human rights, gender inequality and our relation to the environment. The festival will present various photographic exhibits under this theme, introducing new and established photographers, both national and international. The exhibitions will be held in several public and private spaces (historical and monumental buildings, museums, galleries, and others) in an effort to present a diverse program and at the same time give the general public access to spaces that they would not be able to enter otherwise, creating a conscience interest in our historical heritage.
Under this theme, Encontros da Imagem, promoted an open call for the Discovery Awards 2019, where 301 candidates from 42 different countries applied and witch of 14 were selected by an international jury: Azu Nwagbogu (Founder and Director of Lagos Photo Festival), Carlos Fontes (Director of Encontros da Imagem), Estefânia R. de Almeida (Director of Adorna Corações Gallery), Jeanne Mercier (Independent Curator and Co-Founder and Editor-in-chief of Afrique du Vison) and Pablo Berástegui (Director of Salut Ao Monde! Gallery).
The selected artists will exhibit their work at this year’s festival from the 13th of September to the 27th of October in Braga, Portugal.
